The 22-year-old sprung to prominence during the indoor season of 2007, where he lowered his 60m PB from 6.71 to 6.55, as well as winning the Norwich Union International in Glasgow and a silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham, behind Jason Gardener. Pickering continued to improve in the outdoor season, winning the European Cup and setting a lifetime best of 10.14 but due to a series of injury problems his performances stuttered.

Pickering started his 2009 indoor season well, winning the Glasgow International for the third consecutive time but 2010 proved to be a poor one with a best of only 10.38. In 2011 he ran 10.19 to get close to his life-time best under the guidance of new coach Michael Khmel.
