I qualified as a coach in 1963 under the kindly eye of Ron Pickering while I was a student at Swansea University. Coached myself initially to a modest 52:11 10 miler on the hilly Swansea course. My first taste of sports management came as athletic union president before moving to Essex in 1966 and quickly becoming the Chief Coach and club chairman at Basildon AC and the first secretary of the joint men's and women's coaching committee of Essex AAA/WAAA. At Basildon I coached an outstanding girl's endurance group, winning area and national medals. I qualified as a senior coach at 25 with Tom MacNab's help. I also ran 1:55.8 for 880 yds & a 4:18 mile on a grass track with 5 laps to the mile. In 1971 I moved to near Burton-on-Trent and continued my training around the Uttoxeter racecourse. In 1974 we moved to Bristol, becoming the Bristol & West BAL team manager, senior endurance coach and eventually club chairman. During this period I also became responsible for south midlands coach education and was the Midlands Staff Coach for all endurance events. The highlight at Bristol was the high performing 800m squad with several runners running 1:50s to 1:52, including Schools' medallists, Universty & Midland champions from 400 to 10000m and GB/English/Welsh internationals, including the Samy twins and Nigel Gates. Moving back to Midlands in 1994 I coached at Corby AC before becoming chairman of Corby AC and then of the East Midlands region and finally the chair of the EA National Council & a director of EA.. In 2009 I returned to Bristol and became the chair for the second time at B & W . I am currently on my second stint as BAL team manager. Coaching is also progressing well with a good 400-800m group made up of students from Bristol's universities and a loyal bunch of promising locals. The club is progressing well on all fronts and I am pleased to be back in my favourite city.
