Nathan Douglas made an outstanding debut in 2004, when he improved his lifetime best from 16.49m to 16.95m at the Olympic Trials, which gave him qualification for Athens, where the Brit narrowly missed the final. He made a big impact the following season, setting his existing lifetime best of 17.64m at the AAA Championships, which made him a possible medal contender prior to the World Championships in Helsinki, but disappointingly, the Ted King coached athlete did not progress through to the final.

Douglas had an inconsistent 2006 campaign, but despite being somewhat erratic, the Oxford City athlete still won a silver medal at the European Championships, before adding to his tally with a silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in the NIA, when he was narrowly pipped by his team-mate Phillips Idowu for the gold medal. Douglas set a lifetime best of 17.47m in that epic all-Brit final.

After a string of poor competitions in the summer 2008, Douglas finally found some form at the Olympic Trials, improving his season’s best from 16.82m to 17.18m to place third in Birmingham, but for the second successive Olympic Games, Douglas could not find the form to make the final.

2009 didn't produce the marks he was capable of but he still managed to make the final at the World Championships in Berlin where he finished in 10th place and in 2010 he finished in 10th place in the European Championships in Barcelona and in fourth place at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
