Michael has been a successful athlete through all of the age groups and former great, Peter Elliott, tipped him for success at an early age. He emerged in 2006 when winning the AAA Championships at 800m, before finishing eighth in the European Championships final. In 2007, he qualified for the GB team for the World Championships in Osaka, where he made the semi-finals. Despite a bout of bronchitis wrecking the early part of 2008, Olympic year was his best season to date. In his last race before Beijing, Rimmer broke the 1:45 barrier for the first time, running 1:44.68 at the Herculis meet in Monaco. In Beijing, he reached the semi-final stage again.

2009 proved to be a poor year for him and although running in the 1:46 range regularly, he failed to progress to the times he is capable of and his season's best of 1:46.13 set at the London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace, was his slowest for four years. 2010 saw Rimmer show his true potential after an early runners-up spot at the European Team Championships he went on to claim his first major games meadal with a silver medal at the European Championships and a 1:43.89 clocking in Rieti to enter true world-class.

2011 started off well with early encouraging performances over 800m (1:45.12) in the Doha Diamond League and at his home track in Stretford with a 3:38.91 clocking over 1500m. however injury curtailed his progress over the season and he suffered his first defeat at the Aviva World Trials and UK Championships and at the World Championships in Daegu he exited in his heat.

Rimmer is noticeble by his trademark t-shirt which he wears underneath his vest no matter what kind of weather, which he says brings him good luck. He is a keen Liverpool FC supporter and one of his hobbies is collecting vinyl records which began when he was working as a DJ.
