Osagie broke on to the scene in 2007 running, at the time, a huge personal best of 1:47.34. This break through qualified him for his first of many international competitions. In 2009 Osagie qualified for and competed in the European U23 Championships (Kaunas, Lithuania) finishing 9th.
After winning the World Indoor Trials & UK Championships Osagie competed for Great Britain and NI at the 2010 World Indoor Championships. He ran a personal best in qualifying for the semi-finals but narrowly missed out on progression through to the final. Also in 2010, after suffering injury setbacks he competed in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Delhi, India where he again qualified for the semi-finals but narrowly missed out on progression through to the final.
Following his successes indoors in 2010, he continued his run of good form by running personal bests from the 800m and 1000m indoors. He went ahead of Sebastian Coe on the UK All-time list for 1000m indoors (Birmingham) and moved to 5th on the UK All-time list for 800m indoors (Stockholm). He qualified for and represented Great Britain and NI at the 2011 European Athletics Indoor Championships where he finished fourth in the final of the 800m. In the summer of 2011, despite a delayed start to the season again due to injury, Osagie ran a personal best for the 800m (BMC, Stretford) and won the 2011 World Trials & UK Championships (Birmingham). He managed to run another personal best time for the 800m at the Crystal Palace Diamond League before heading out to the 2011 World Championships, Daegu, South Korea. At the championships Osagie cruised through the heats and made a good showing in the semi-final but couldn't make it into the strong final.
Andrew's ability to race well means that medals at any level are always a possibility. At the 2012 World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey he finished third in the final, winning a bronze medal. This medal was the stimulus to a great summer season in 2012. Osagie ran person bests for 800m at Diamond League meetings in Doha, New York and Monaco before winning the Olympic Trials & UK Championships.
In August 2012, at the 2012 Olympics, London, Osagie progressed through the heats and finished second in his semi-final just behind world record holder and gold medal favourite David Rudisha automatically qualifying him for Olympics 800 metres final. On 9 August 2012, he ran the final, despite running another huge personal best he finished last in a race where seven athletes set lifetime bests and the other set a season's best. Rudisha took the gold medal, breaking his own world record in the process in what was the fastest race in history. Osagie's time of 1:43.77 placed him fourth on the UK All-time list for 800m and was the fastest ever eighth-place finish in an 800m race; all athletes in the London 2012 Men's 800m final set positional world records from first to eighth. Osagie's time would have won him the gold medal at each of the three preceding Olympic Games. The 2012 season ended with Osagie being ranked in the World's top 10 and being voted European Middle-Distance Athlete of the year 2012.
The summer season of 2013 saw another string of world class performances from Osagie. An undiagnosed hamstring tear picked up during the New York Diamond League race in May, lead to another hamstring tear at the Lausanne Diamond League race in July, eventually leading to Osagie having to miss the 2013 World Trials & UK Championships. Osagie did however manage to get back on the track for the 2013 World Championships, Moscow, Russia. He eased through the heats and ran a season's best in the semi-final to qualify for the final. In the 2013 World Championships 800m final Osagie finished 5th in another season's best and his second fastest time ever. Despite the injuries that hampered his training and racing for months throughout the season it was clear to see the potential that Osagie possessed and he was rewarded by again being ranked in the World's top 10 for 2013.
After looking like he won the 2014 World Indoor Trials & UK Championships at a canter, Osagie was later disqualified from the final due to a lane infringement. This results didn't seem to affect him too much though as at the 2014 Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix he smashed his indoor 800m personal best and went 2nd on the UK All-time list only 0.31 seconds away from Sebastian Coe's British record. This performance cemented Osagie's place on the Great Britain and NI team for the 2014 World Indoor Championships, Sopot, Poland. Running a fast time in a convincing fashion in his heat he eventually finished 3rd in the 800m final, securing his second medal at successive championships.
He says that his long time coach Craig Winrow, is one of his biggest influences and believes he helped turn him into an international athlete.
Andrew is also a black belt in karate along with his brother, sister, uncle and cousin!
